Architectural Shading & Daylight Design
Designing how light lives within a space.
The South Carolina Lowcountry
Connect with UsLight shapes how a room feels long before anything else does. Before the finishes. Before the furniture. Before the art.
Coastal Shading Studio is the Lowcountry’s Architectural Shading & Daylight Design Studio. We work alongside homeowners, interior designers, architects and custom builders to shape the way daylight enters, moves through, and finally settles into a home.
Designed around light
Shading is not a finishing touch. It is part of the architecture.
Too often shading is treated as an afterthought — added at the end, rather than designed in from the start. We do things differently. As a local, family-owned studio rooted in the coastal lifestyle, we’ve spent years learning how light moves through this region’s homes: the glare off the water in late afternoon, the deep golden hour through a great room’s wall of windows, the need for total blackout in a primary suite.
That experience shapes every recommendation we make — and it is why we ask to be in the conversation early, while walls are still drawings.
Expertise
Six disciplines, one continuous conversation about light.
Architectural Shading
Shading detailed as part of the building — recessed pockets, concealed headrails, and clean reveals specified alongside the millwork rather than fitted around it.Automated Shading
Quiet, precise motorized shades that rise and fall on a schedule, a keypad, a voice command or the sun’s own position — so a room adjusts before anyone thinks to ask.Drapery & Textiles
Custom drapery on motorized or hand-drawn tracks, layered over shading for softness, acoustics and depth. Fabric weight, weave and drop chosen with the room’s palette in hand.Daylight Management
Openness factor, fabric opacity and orientation resolved window by window — balancing glare, solar heat gain, UV protection for art and finishes, and the view you bought the house for.Outdoor Shading
Weather-ready motorized screens and shades that extend the living space onto the porch and lanai — holding back sun, wind and insects without giving up the marsh view.Integrated Control
Lutron and other leading platforms brought together with lighting, climate and audio, so whole-home scenes read as one gesture rather than six apps.Architectural Shading

Expertise
Designed in collaboration.
The best shading decisions are made early — while walls are still drawings.
Homeowners
We walk the house with you, room by room, at the hours that matter — and translate how you actually live into fabric, opacity and control.
Interior Designers
A shading specialist who speaks your language: weave, drape, hand and color resolved against your scheme, with the technical detailing handled quietly behind it.
Architects
Bring us in at design development and shading disappears into the building — pockets sized correctly, reveals aligned, headrails concealed, nothing surface-mounted as a remedy.
Custom Builders
One point of contact for shading and automation: rough-in requirements issued on time, trades coordinated, and a clean, punch-list-free finish at handover.

Expertise
Technology, quietly integrated.
The most sophisticated system in a house is the one nobody notices. Motors you cannot hear. Keypads that sit flush with the plaster. Schedules that follow the sun rather than the clock. Shades that have already moved by the time the light would have become a problem.
Lutron and other leading smart-home platforms, specified and integrated as one system.
Astronomical timeclock schedules that track sunrise, sunset and seasonal drift.
Keypads and controls placed and engraved to disappear into the architecture.
Whole-home scenes — morning, midday, evening, away — as a single instruction.
Quiet motors, precise alignment, and hems that stop where they are told to.
In their words

Let’s design the light around the way you live.
Whether you’re building a new home, renovating an existing space, or integrating shading into a larger interior vision, we’d love to be part of the conversation.
